Check for Cameras: Ask the host if there are any security cameras on the property. While hidden cameras are prohibited, it’s still a good idea to do a quick scan inside the house to ensure you’re not unwillingly being recorded. MNP specifically prohibits hidden cameras and requires hosts to disclose their presence.
Store Valuables Safely: Keep your valuables secure. Consider using a lockbox or safe provided by the host. Avoid leaving valuable items out in the open.
Confirm Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detecotrs: Ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are present and functioning. These are crucial for your safety in case of emergencies.
Get the Lay of the Land: Familiarize yourself with the property layout. Locate emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and escape routes. Knowing where things are can be vital during an urgent situation.
Set Up Your Own Alarms:: If you have personal safety alarms (such as portable door alarms), consider using them. These can provide an extra layer of security.
Turn On Tracking: Share your location with a trusted friend or family member. This way, someone knows where you are in case of any unforeseen events.
